Brisbane garden maintenance checklist

Use this list to walk around your Brisbane garden before you book. Each section says what to look for, what to photograph and what's worth telling us.

The checklist

What to look at before you book garden maintenance

Lawns and edges

Mowing height, edges and dry patches

Look at how long the grass is, how neat the edges are and where it grows fast or thin. Note shady spots, slopes and dry patches. They show us whether a mow and edge will do, or whether the watering and soil need a look as well.

  • Take photos of the front and back lawn, the edges, the paths and the verge if they need work.
  • Note any patches that are scalped, dry, weedy or hard to get to.
  • Decide if you just want a mow and edge, or want the lawn looked after as part of regular garden maintenance.

Worth telling us

Say which areas need mowing and how regularly it gets mowed now. Slopes, tricky access and any trouble with the sprinklers are worth a mention, and so is how neat you'd like it kept between visits.

Hedges and pruning

Hedge size, shape and timing

Check how tall and long the hedge is, and what plant it is if you know. Think about how we'd reach both sides, whether it has a formal shape and when it flowers. Some hedges want a light trim. Others need thinning or a hard cut back, and a few are best left for a better time of year.

  • Take photos from both sides of the hedge if you can get around it.
  • Show where it's growing over paths, windows, fences or the driveway, or onto the neighbour's side.
  • Say whether it needs a light trim or a big cut back. The timing and the amount of green waste can be quite different.

Worth telling us

Height and length help us most. After that, it's how easy the hedge is to get to, what you'd like done with the green waste, any flowers you want to keep and whether you'd like us back regularly.

Weeds and garden beds

Where the weeds are growing

Show us where the weeds are. Some beds only need hand weeding. Others need the paths sorted, fresh mulch, new plants or a big tidy up. If you'd like fewer chemicals, or organic methods tried first, say so.

  • Photograph weeds in the beds, along paths and edges, in gravel or paving, and where the lawn meets the garden.
  • Show bare soil, tired mulch, crowded plants, dead growth and the area around your front door.
  • Mention pets, kids or anything you eat from the garden if organic methods matter to you.

Worth telling us

Let us know what state the mulch and plants are in and how you feel about sprays. It also helps to know whether the work is for a sale, a seasonal visit or ongoing care.

Irrigation, mulch and soil

Signs the watering or mulch needs work

Add irrigation, mulch and soil to the job if the lawn is patchy, beds dry out fast or paths stay wet. Blocked emitters, thin mulch and plants that struggle even with regular watering are other signs.

  • Take photos of dry beds, wet paths, sprinklers spraying where they shouldn't, blocked emitters and patchy lawn.
  • Note whether there's already an irrigation system, and when it last worked properly.
  • Show how deep the mulch is, any bare soil, new plants and spots that dry out before the rest of the garden.

Worth telling us

Describe what the watering problem looks like and what kind of system you have, if you know. New plants, fresh mulch and where the taps are all help too. Mention whether the problem shows up all year or only at certain times.

How often we come

Regular visits or a one off job

Pick a one off garden clean up when the place needs sorting out now. Regular maintenance suits you if the lawn, hedges, beds and weeds keep falling behind and you're tired of catching up.

  • Say why you want the work done: regular upkeep, catching up after a season, getting ready to sell, or a one off job.
  • Pick the spots that need to look good first, like the front entry, lawn edges, paths, hedges or the outdoor entertaining area.
  • Include when you need it done, how we get in and what should happen with the green waste.

Worth telling us

Say what you want the garden to look like, how far behind it's got and whether you want us fortnightly, monthly or just once. If there's a deadline, like an inspection, a sale, a new lease or an event, give us the date.

Suburb by suburb

Notes for some of the suburbs we cover

Give us your suburb along with the problem. It helps us work out which jobs your place needs before we quote.

Paddington, Auchenflower, West End and Milton

Access and paths matter most here. Then look at the front entry and any narrow beds. Mention weeds too, and any sale date. Smaller gardens and Queenslander yards may need a big tidy up before regular visits make sense.

Indooroopilly, Toowong, Taringa and St Lucia

Look at the lawn, any slopes, how the sprinklers are going and how quickly the hedges grow. Some places need a seasonal visit before the growth takes off.

Chelmer, Graceville, Sherwood and Corinda

Mature hedges and long lawn edges are worth a photo, and so are the garden beds and the spots the family uses. If kids or pets play outside, tell us whether you'd like organic methods tried first.

Ascot, Hawthorne and Balmoral

Send photos of the hedge lines, lawn edges, shaped shrubs and the front of the house. Mention the sprinklers too, and how neat you want things kept between visits.

Brookfield, Kenmore and Fig Tree Pocket

Check the lawn areas, access, the mix of plants and each irrigation zone. Let us know how much green waste to expect, and whether mowing should fit in with soil, mulch or organic care.

Getting a quote

What to put in your quote request

Tell us your suburb and send photos of the lawn, hedges and beds. Add close ups of weeds, sprinklers and the way in. Say how far behind the garden has got and what should happen with the green waste. Then tell us what you're after: regular upkeep, a seasonal visit, a tidy up before a sale or a one off clean up.

What should a Brisbane garden maintenance checklist include?

Start with the lawn and edges, the hedges and pruning, and the weeds in your beds. Then check irrigation, mulch and soil. Add access, green waste, your suburb and whether you'd like regular, seasonal or one off help.

Can this checklist help me pick a Garden Barber service?

Yes. Lawn and edge problems point to lawn mowing or regular garden maintenance. For overgrown hedges and shrubs, look at hedge trimming or pruning. Dry beds and patchy lawns might need irrigation work, mulch or organic horticulture.

When is a one off garden clean up enough?

When you need overgrown edges, weeds, tired beds or green waste dealt with once, or you're getting the place ready to sell. If the same problems keep coming back, regular maintenance is the way to go.

What photos should I send with a garden maintenance enquiry?

Tell us your suburb and send photos of the lawn, hedges and beds. Add close ups of weeds, sprinklers and the way in. Say how far behind the garden has got and what should happen with the green waste. Then tell us what you're after: regular upkeep, a seasonal visit, a tidy up before a sale or a one off clean up.
